“Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please Him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it” (2 Corinthians 5:6-9).

I’m only passin’ through on my way Home
Heaven is the place where I belong
More than just a feeling or a dream
A land beyond the stars is calling me
When the Savior comes for me, I’ll go
To live forever, finally at Home

Cruise ship deckI read a thought-provoking message on a church sign, “Life Is Your Ship, Not Your Home”. It didn’t specify the author but from an internet search it appears to be from several hundred years ago in the seventeen hundreds by a Therese of Lisieux.

Today we may read the quote and many would envision a luxury cruise ship. That wouldn’t be so bad; smooth sailing, beautiful scenery, abundant foods, myriads of entertainment. “I could make this my home” many would say. (Not me!)

But when the quote was written traveling by ship would have been an ordeal, a mere necessity of getting from one side of the ocean to another. Ships were extremely uncomfortable and the journey fraught with danger. Nobody would consider making the ship their home!

However using the analogy there is a temptation in life to make the ship our home.

Thankfully there are periods in life that are kind of like a cruise ship. Life may be going pretty well, smooth sailing.

But most of us have also experienced in varying degrees the turbulent waters. And you probably know someone right now who is in troubled waters. Presently the news is all about the hurricane which is affecting millions and some very tragically.

We have a friend that has been through several months of extreme turbulence. At times the ship may even seem to be sinking. He is a man of deep faith but we can see the heavy toll this trial is taking. He needs a breakthrough! But above all may he have the deep assurance that life is the ship and not the home.

In our daily Scripture passage the Apostle Paul makes some vitally important points concerning where home is, especially the phrase, “away from the body and at home with the Lord”.

Bible teacher Ray Stedman, who has been home with the Lord since 1992, writes,

Paul uses the term “at home” to describe both our present experience in an earthly body and the coming experience when we are “with the Lord.” We are now “at home” in the body, though away from the Lord. Then we shall be away from the body, but “at home” with the Lord. In either case, we are “at home.”

All our tenderest associations gather around the word “home.” It is where we feel relaxed, at ease, natural. And when we step into the stunning glory awaiting us, we will feel the same way–at home, relaxed, at ease, because we have not changed our basic method of operation. At home, here in the body, we are learning to walk by faith in a way that feels natural and comfortable. At home with the Lord, it will be the same.  (Authentic Christianity — Chapter 9 Time and Eternity)

Today, whether you life is analogous to a peaceful cruise ship or a storm-battered freighter may you realize where your real home is.

Be encouraged today,

Praying manDaily Prayer:  Father, because the Scripture tells us so much about our future eternal home, may we find ourselves homesick for a place we’ve never been. Remind us that you want us to live as strangers in this world in reverential fear toward You, our holy God! Our hopes, our affections and our joys will be fully realized on the other side where Jesus will wipe away the tears from our eyes and we will know no sorrow, no suffering, no good-byes and no sin. Can’t wait but will endure till we make it home! Amen.
