“When Sin Pays”

“The more priests there were, the more they sinned against me; they exchanged their glorious God for something disgraceful. They feed on the sins of my people and relish their wickedness” (Hosea 4:7,8).

Let us seek to always align our motives with that which honors God.

“A Lack Of Knowledge”

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). “’The days are coming,’ declares the Sovereign LORD, ‘when I will send a famine through the land—not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD'” (Amos 8:11).

Message summary: “With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:104,105).

“A Good Reputation”

“Mordecai was prominent in the palace; his reputation spread throughout the provinces, and he became more and more powerful” (Esther 9:4). “He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap” (1 Timothy 3:7).

Message summary: God calls us as His followers to build a good reputation that is truly a witness for Him.

“Our Final Appointment”

“Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him” (Genesis 35:29). “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

Message summary: There is a final appointment that we will all keep. It is not optional and we can’t dismiss it.

“Self-Control”

“Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control” (Proverbs 25:28). “But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet” (1 Thessalonians 5:8). “The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ…” (Titus 2:11-14a).

Message summary: What are the areas in your life in which you need to exercise self-control? Take some time to pray and reflect on those things that have become fetters and take steps to improve the situation or in some instances eradicate it from your life. Remember, passions forge fetters.

“Vows That Endure”

Weber ccouple photo 1976

Fifty years ago in the fall of 1973 our romance began on the campus of Central Bible College in Springfield, MO. (I had just turned 19 & Brooksyne turned 18 on our first date) This photo was taken sometime before we got married in May 1976. Today following several chaplain visits we are going out to Red Robin for our Valentine’s Day meal and then we’re heading over to the America’s Transportation Experience in Hershey, one of our favorite museums.

“A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25).

Message summary: Today we consider a rapidly diminishing quality, marital vows that endure.

“Be A Plodder”

Philippians 3:14

So let us know, let us press on to know the LORD.” (Hosea 6:3a) “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14).

Message summary: Don’t be deterred by the difficulties of life, but plod on, one step at a time.

“When Not To Be Ashamed”

Romans 1:16

“For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day” (2 Timothy 1:12).

Message summary: As our world continues its plunge into wickedness and shamelessly promotes it, Christ’s true church needs to unashamedly stand firm for this Gospel even if it requires suffering.

“Old Disciples”

Red and Elsie

Red and Elsie, along with Brooksyne

“I was young and now I am old” (Psalm 37:25). “There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge” (Acts 21:16). “I then, as Paul–an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus” (Philemon 1:9b).

Message summary: Do you know some old disciples? I hope so! Let them know you appreciate them and invite their input in your life. Are you an “old disciple?” God’s not finished using you on this side, not till He takes you to your eternal home. And even then the life you lived continues to inspire others toward faithfulness until their earthly journey is over. That should make us all want to stay faithful!

“The Ninety-nine”

Matthew 8:12

“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?” (Luke 15:4). “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Message summary: Today’s verse is from the first in a series of parables dealing with lostness; the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost (prodigal) son. In each case Christ teaches the effort made to seek and save the lost with a clear message about the value of the lost soul and the immeasurable love of the Savior.
