Today we consider three more ways in which Jesus Christ is our sure and steady anchor of hope. Points 1-3 were shared in Tuesday’s message and 4-6 in Wednesday’s message.

“Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor” (Part 1)

“We who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19).

Note: Our pastor uses the phrase “anchor passage” to describe verses that are foundational to our faith. All this week we will be using both the same verse and theme song as anchors for a consideration of the hope and assurance we have in Christ. After today’s introductory message we will consider twelve blessings concerning our anchor of hope in Christ, three each day.

Message summary: Rest in this blessed assurance: God and His Word provide hope for the only steady anchor and sure foundation for the soul. Today let us focus on the immutable God whose Word has promised: “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal” (Isaiah 26:3,4).

“Daily Encouragement”

“When he (Saul, later known as Paul) came to Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles” (Acts 9:26,27). “Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). “But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25).

Message summary: Are you a Barnabas?  Be an encourager!

“The Wisdom of the Aged”

“Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?” (Job 12:12). “I have been young, and now am old” (Psalm 37:25). “Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness” (Titus 2:2).

Message summary: Spending time with the aged who have experienced so much of the stuff of life that we will all eventually face is such an important aspect to the maturing believer.

“No Lasting City”

“For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1). “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God” Hebrews 11:8-10). “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come” (Hebrews 13:14).

Message summary: We want to remember where our ultimate home is. An old gospel song provides a fitting aspiration, “And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore!” God never intended that we drive the stakes of our earthy tent too deeply. “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come” (Hebrews 13:14).

“Another Trip Around The Sun”

“Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:2,12).

Message summary: The timeless challenge issued by Joshua echoes throughout the ages: “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:14,15).
