“A Fishing Story”

Due to travel a podcast is not available today.“‘I’m going out to fish,’ Simon Peter told them, and they said, ‘We’ll go with you.’ So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, ‘Friends, haven’t you any fish?’ ‘No,’ they answered. He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish” (John 21:3-6).

Striped bass from Chesapeake BayThis week I (Stephen) am in Springfield Missouri for a chaplain training conference. I came in Saturday afternoon and stayed that evening with my friend Dave Simpson and his wife Sandy who live in this area. Dave and I met nearly 55 years ago in first grade when his family lived across the street from mine. We reminisced about our childhood as we always do and the many activities we enjoyed such as going fishing, usually in farm ponds outside Belton Missouri.

Palomino trout caught in Pine Creek PA by Rick SteudlerFishermen love telling fishing stories. The big one they caught or the big one that got away. Most fishermen have a photo they enjoy sharing such as the photo of our friend Rick and his palomino trout he caught in northern Pennsylvania. Often the stories are about the experiences they have while fishing.Dave reminded me of a story from our childhood when we had gone fishing out in the country south of Belton, Missouri, the little town we grew up in. We had camped out overnight in our tent and decided to do a little fishing. Dave climbed up a tree and found a comfortable branch to sit on where he could cast his fishing line in the water. Suddenly the branch snapped and he fell in the water, getting his brand new Wrangler blue jeans soaking wet. He brought no spare clothing so I came to his rescue with the bright idea of building a camp fire so he could dry his pants over it. I proudly informed Dave that my Boy Scout credentials had prepared me for emergencies such as this one. I built a roaring fire and then went back to fishing while he took cover in the tent as his pants were drying out on a line we made over the fire. But rather than dry out they burned up as they caught on fire! Dave sure had some explaining to do to his mom when he got home which she still remembers to this day. It’s also a camping trip that Dave never forgot.

A very memorable fishing story took place 2000 years ago and is repeated often even to this day since it was recorded in Scripture and included a miraculous intervention.  It took place shortly after Christ’s resurrection.  Peter, for some reason, had a hankering to go fishing and told the other disciples, “I’m going out to fish.” The other disciples said, “We’ll go with you.” and they fished all night and caught nothing. That must have been a hard, discouraging fishing trip.  Anyone who’s ever been fishing knows the frustration the disciples experienced in the daily text. Early in the morning Jesus stood on the shore but they were unable to recognize Him, possibly due to a morning mist or because of the distance. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”  Of course the resurrected Lord knew they hadn’t caught anything!

A seasoned fisherman knows that he must cast his reel in all directions to find where the fish are biting. When I’m fishing from a boat I’ll try fishing from the back, each side and even the front if I can get there. Surely during the course of the night the disciples had moved about trying to cast their nets in various places in search of fish.

But Jesus had some specific and unusual fishing advice. “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” Now surely they had tried this already but Peter didn’t hesitate in responding to the voice in the distance.  His obedience resulted in a great catch of 153 large fish (v.11).

The story concludes around a warm fire as well with the disciples joining Jesus for a seashore breakfast along with some teaching. I have a feeling that those disciples involved in this fishing story talked about it everywhere they went!

It’s always been interesting to me that they counted the fish they caught that morning and the total number is included in the Scripture account. What an authenticating detail this is. Real fishermen keep track of how many fish they catch, particularly keepers!

Have you ever worked hard in some form of Christian service and not “caught” anything? We may serve in some form of ministry for Christ that, at least for a season, seems to be going nowhere. We’re not “catching” anything. We don’t see receptivity or growth which can be very discouraging. But we need to stay faithful and listen to the voice of our Master and learn from the disciples’ fishing trip.

We need to trust and obey. There will be discouraging times and mysterious delays in our service for the Lord. I am sure there was for the disciples and other early followers of our Lord as well. Notable leaders throughout church history had these experiences as well. Charles Spurgeon looked back upon dark hours in his own life and said, “I bear willing witness that I owe more to the fire, and the hammer, and the file, than to anything else in my Lord’s workshop. I sometimes question whether I have ever learned anything except through the rod. When my schoolroom is darkened, I see most.”

When they first met, Jesus had said to Peter and his brother Andrew, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19).  Peter indeed became a great fisher of men and in some ways we are all his spiritual descendants. We are all called to be fishers of men. Stay faithful, the catch is coming!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Thankful manDaily prayer:Father, it is during times of discouragement or bewilderment that I find myself more attentive to Your instruction. My heart is more absorbing of the truths You want to convey when I walk in obedience and leave the results to You. Help me to always remember that You are the Teacher and I am the student. I welcome the wisdom of the Master to guide me into all truths,  and sustain me in the moments of silence and waiting. Amen.

Rob Crocker
After our church service yesterday I joined Dave and Sandy for dinner and their son Rob joined us. He is a colorful young man whose best (or worst) memory of me was the time I accidentally hit him on the head with a tennis racquet when he was little boy! About 30 years ago he was playing in the back court when Brooksyne and I were playing doubles with Dave and Sandy. I went back for a stroke and not seeing him whopped him on the head with a back stroke requiring a trip to the emergency room and stitches. Thankfully he recovered well and now works in technical computer design.

David has a business that makes precision fabricated steel parts such as huge tanks. Holloway America The company has an interesting way of expressing the worth of each employee (about 140 as I recall) by posting large framed photos along the walls of the office area of the employees doing their job. This welder has a very interesting hood.

“Being The Salt Of The Earth”

“You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). “Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person” (Colossians 4:6).

SaltIn the Sermon on the Mount Jesus used two common items to illustrate the impact His followers were to have on the world around them; salt and light. I marvel at His ability to be cross-cultural and multi-generational. Who among our readers, regardless of where you may live, are not familiar with salt and light?

Today we will focus on being salty. The church of Jesus Christ has a great mandate directly from Christ for all who choose to follow Him. We are to be “the salt of the earth.” Although there are many usages of salt there are likely two purposes that Christ’s initial hearers could identify with; salt used as a flavoring and as a preservative.

In both cases it is vitally important that the salt be evenly distributed over that which is to be salted. Hundreds of thousands of small units known as local churches dot the globe. (Even the largest local church is a relatively small unit.) Hundreds of millions of individual believers meet in these churches to receive encouragement and exhortation to go forth as the salt of the earth.

But in a practical sense what does this mean? Let’s focus on the preserving nature of salt. The salt is distributed as we faithfully follow Him and share God’s truth with our world.

We contend that two critical components of this saltiness is living righteously and expressing truth in love:

1) Living righteously; that is, living in obedience to God’s Word: In the context speaking of light Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). As a result of God’s transforming grace in our salvation we seek to earnestly find out what pleases the Lord. The grace of God “teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age” (Titus 2:11,12).

2) Speaking the truth in love: We need to lovingly address and confront sin, first of course in our own life but also as a salty, preserving influence to others. This is now so politically incorrect that some readers will chafe at our words. We can hear people saying, “But that will be seen as judgmental, intolerant, unloving.” Sadly this attitude has silenced so many that those who do speak out are rarer and rarer. I am intrigued by the words in the second passage, “so that you will know how you should respond to each person.”

Our dominant culture has become so Biblically illiterate that, for the majority of people, spiritual salt has become distasteful and even objectionable. This will continue to happen as the restraining salty influence of older believers is diminishing as they pass on to their reward.

Presently an increasing number of people have no knowledge of God or His law; having been raised on the Simpsons, MTV and our increasingly godless public education system.* Many have no idea what Sunday School is and very few parents, particularly fathers, take their Scriptural mandate seriously (Ephesians 6:4).

Today we spread out like grains of salt through the culture that surrounds us. You may see your work as just a necessary but spiritually insignificant part of your life. But I believe God uses our work to evenly distribute our presence throughout the culture around us. How salty are you?

You may look around and see but a few grains of salt where you work. In a few cases you may be the only grain. You may feel, “What difference am I making?” At times the difference we make is recognizable. What a blessing it is to experience the joy of ministry for Christ in leading someone to faith or in bringing encouragement to a fellow believer. But at other times we must practice a steady obedience in being salty and wait to see the impact of our saltiness.

Each of us is like a tiny grain of salt today. Brooksyne and I so enjoy the feedback we receive in this ministry. You come from all over the globe with various backgrounds and you serve Christ in many ways. You may feel your contribution is insignificant, but it’s not. In concert with millions of other believers you are presenting, flavoring, and preserving the truth, righteousness and order in this increasingly chaotic world.

Stay faithful and remain salty!

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, I want the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart to be pleasing to You this day. I pray that my conversation is uplifting so that I build others up rather than tear them down. Just as salt is tasty to food making it more pleasant to eat, I pray that my dialogue is wholesome making conversation pleasant and beneficial to those who listen. Because of Your redemptive work in my life I am blessed and highly flavored with the preserving salt of Your holy Word. I want to spread the message of Your salvation to others so that they are snatched from the evil one and their lives are preserved for this life and the next. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

* Teacher friends and family: I realize there are many good and godly teachers. I have them in my family as well as churches I have served, along with several in the present church we attend. But I contend the system increasingly promotes ungodly behavior. Any reference to the Bible, God’s standards, or godly living is likely to prompt a visit from the ACLU, Freedom From Religion Foundation or some other ungodly group. We need to be in prayer for our Christian teachers as they seek to be salt and light in the classroom.

Another visit to the Pennsylvania Farm Show! Late Wednesday afternoon I got a call from Moses, a little nine-year old Amish boy, asking me if I could take his dad and younger siblings to the Pennsylvania Farm Show. How could I say no? So following our chaplain visitation yesterday morning I picked them up at their dairy farm, dropped Brooksyne off at home on the way, and we drove up to Harrisburg. Due to the very long time away from home yesterday we did not post a daily encouragement message.

“You Also Must Testify”

“When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify about Me.  And you also must testify, for you have been with Me from the beginning” (John 15:26,27).

Jake and Nancy ShenkLast night we heard a mission presentation by Jake and Nancy Shenk who first went to Africa in 1958. Jake recently had some health problems and was discharged from a 15 day stay in the hospital only the day before. Nevertheless he and Nancy were in our service and plan to return to Africa as soon as he is able. They continue to bear a burden for the needy souls of the African people after serving in that continent over 50 years.

Bruce OlsonMany years ago Brooksyne and I read a book titled “For This Cross I’ll Kill You” by missionary Bruce Olson.  It’s  the testimony of his ministry as he took the gospel message to the Motilone Indians of South America when he was only 19 in 1961.  As he lived among them he discovered that the Holy Spirit had already prepared their hearts for the Gospel seed with a long-standing, orally repeated legend that could not be adequately explained by the Motilone people.  Bruce had to live among them to earn their confidence and favor.   In time he was able to present the Gospel message after the Holy Spirit revealed to him answers the Motilone people sought to know. *

Thank God for the witness of the Holy Spirit!  In John’s Gospel Jesus gives His final teaching to the disciples prior to His death. Repeatedly He speaks of the work of the Holy Spirit.  Jesus was not only anticipating His death but His return to the Father.  He told the disciples the Spirit of truth “will testify about Me.”  Have you considered the many ways this has taken place in your life?  I’ve also heard remarkable stories from the mission field, such as Bruce Olson’s, where the Holy Spirit has prepared the hearts of people years and even generations before the missionary came.

But consider the phrase, “And you must also testify.”  This verse grips me because Christ emphasized it following His teaching on the witness of the Holy Spirit.  As Christians we need to be careful that our proper dependence on the Holy Spirit does not become a dodging of our personal responsibility in witnessing to others. Christ said, “You must also testify.”

How are you testifying today?  It begins by living a life that consistently demonstrates Christ-like character, which itself will stand out in today’s morally decadent age.  I hope you also have tracts, booklets and other helps available to distribute to the seekers around you.  I hope your “space” bears a witness to your faith; it may be a poster or plaque with an expression of faith.  But I hope you also are prepared and bold in your verbal witness of who Christ is and what He has done.  The Holy Spirit is surely faithful in His part.  Are we being faithful in ours?

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily Prayer: Father, You have called us to be faithful witnesses wherever we live and in whatever we do.  You haven’t delegated this responsibility just to those in vocational ministries, but to all who have experienced Your forgiveness through salvation.  By Your grace we will be shining lights throughout our darkened nation so that others will see the glory of Christ in our lives and hear the message of hope in our faithful witness.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

“Faithful In Prayer”

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

Today’s message is the third in a 3 part series from Romans 12:12:
“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer.”

“Faithful In Prayer”
“Faithful in prayer” (Romans 12:12).

Thankful manYesterday we stopped by The Village Farm Market, east of Ephrata Pennsylvania for lunch. As I waited for Brooksyne to bring out our made–to-order ham and cheese subs I sat down at one of the picnic tables under the big roof overhang in front of the store. Two younger “Plain” men who sat at the table right next to me appeared to be carpenters. Without saying a word to each other they bowed their heads for a few moments of silent prayer as is their custom prior to a meal. From an early age they were taught by word and example the practice of giving thanks for the food set before them. Of course I have no idea about other aspects of their spiritual life, but was heartened by this simple act of faithfulness and devotion toward God.

Prayer is a foundational expression of faith. We speak but cannot see the One to whom we speak. We listen, not with our physical sense of hearing, but rather the spiritual inner heart. Jesus says in John 4, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” The effects of our prayers are often not immediate and at times seem ambiguous, at least from our perspective. Bluntly we may wonder if prayer really does any good.

Praying womanIn Colossians 4:2 Paul offers a similar verse to today’s text: “Devote yourselves to prayer.” In fact in the Greek it is the very same phrase. The sense of “devote” implies a strong attachment, allegiance, and affection for someone or something; in this case, prayer and the act of praying. It would include one’s passion, time, and needed resources. One who is devoted is passionate in his commitment and consistency and will not be disloyal, inconsistent, or indifferent. This character description should give us a mental picture of one who is devoted to prayer.

“Faithful” is in the present imperative which denotes that we are to continually, habitually follow this command. It is to be one’s continual way of life (lifestyle). This Scriptural call is not a suggestion but a command to make it our habitual practice. Remember that whatever God commands of us He also provides the grace and empowerment through His Spirit to carry out.

Prayer at altarSomeone has well said that “Prayer is the breath of the Christian life and almost nothing decays so fast in the fallen human heart as the desire to pray.” In other words, nothing is more vital than prayer in Christian existence, and few things are more vulnerable to neglect. We must come back to it again and again and stoke the fire lest, out of neglect, it becomes nothing more than useless cold embers.

Most Christians will confess the difficulty of maintaining a regular and effective prayer life. The reason is not difficult to discern. If Satan can keep us out of touch with God, he will not have to worry about any trouble we might cause for his evil kingdom.

Believing friend, when we are prayed up our allurement to sin is far less appealing, our spirit is strengthened, and our communion with God becomes the anchor which holds us steady in the daily stresses and major events of our life.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily Prayer: Father, the clamor for our heart’s devotion comes from many sources and often overpowers the beckoning command from Scripture to devote ourselves daily to prayer. As we are faithful in prayer we have power to overcome the enemy and intensify our love and devotion to You. We know that prayer is not optional for the believer, but an ordinance from the Bible. You who created us knows what will sustain us and keep us from falling into the hands of our enemy. Help us to be faithful in prayer so that we will be also be joyful in hope and patient in affliction. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Yesterday Tom, a longtime friend from northern PA, commented on the message “Patient in Affliction” and suggested reading Psalm 66. I note
verses 10-12 are especially pertinent to the topic.

We enjoy harvest scenes and fully matured plantings are being harvested all through the summer. Presently it’s wheat and hay.

Wagon
I was visiting some men in a factory in the course of our chaplain work yesterday and noticed this scene outside of one of the shipping docks. I suppose this is not a common sight for too many of our readers where they work!

Wheat shocks
The wheat is cut and then stacked in shocks to dry. It will be gathered and the grain will be removed with a thresher (see photo). I spoke to my friend Elvin, a member of an old order group yesterday, and he told me that the children will help in pitching up the wheat onto the wagons. That would be a great photo!

This farmer had five of his children on the wagon.
Notice the little girls with their bonnets!

Alfalfa bales on wagon in Amish barn
We had a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon and this farmer managed to get his freshly baled alfalfa into the barn just in time!

Miniature horse
We stopped by a friend’s house for a visit late yesterday afternoon and Daniel invited me to sit up on his cart. It was a pleasurable sight to watch him riding along on his cart as he was delivering some plants to neighbors.  I thought you’d get a sense of how miniature the horse is if I sat on the cart.  Some dog breeds are bigger than these horses.

“Power For Witness”

“Power For Witness”

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Yesterday churches around the world celebrated Pentecost Sunday. Before Jesus ascended into heaven He stated very clearly the purpose of the coming of the Holy Spirit in our daily verse.  It can be summed up in the phrase, “Power for witness.”

Some 721,500 days have passed since the initial outpouring when God’s Holy Spirit fell upon the 120 who gathered in the Upper Room. Yet today the Holy Spirit continues to empower men and women, young and old to touch people for Christ even to the ends of the earth.

Today you have left the spiritual comfort zone of your church and entered the mission field God has called you to.  Many of you are surrounded by people who curse and blaspheme God.  There are people who may mock and revile you because of your stand for Christ.  These are the people that God has empowered you to be a witness to!

The rubber is meeting the road when you are in their presence.  The spiritually enriching, perhaps emotionally touching experience of yesterday was for this very witness.  God has called you to BE a witness (Gr. “martus”).  Now this will certainly include the verbal defense and explanation of our faith. However it really involves all that we are; Christ’s character being formed and demonstrated in our lives.

It is God’s plan to continue to fill His people with the Holy Spirit even as He did in the book of Acts.  Peter preached a great sermon following the initial outpouring in Acts 2 and 3,000 people were saved!  We certainly still need the power of the Spirit today.  In examining Peter’s sermon we note that God gave Peter power to proclaim the Gospel message and he demonstrates four characteristics we need in our witness:

1) No one has power to proclaim unless the Lord gives him strength to stand up (Acts 2:14).
2) No one has power to proclaim who leaves the Scriptures unopened and unused. Notice Peter’s use of Scripture in his sermon (Acts 2:17-21, 25-28 and 34,35).
3) No one has power to proclaim whose life is not centered on Jesus (Acts 4:13).
4) No one has power to proclaim unless the foundational message of the Gospel is shared.  Peter stuck to the basics.  In Acts the main things are the plain things (Believe, repent, be baptized, be filled with the Spirit, walk with Jesus).  Let this be true in our own life and witness. (Acts 2:42)

Today the power for being His witness is still available.  I pray that we will be filled with the Holy Spirit and bear a faithful witness for Christ!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, as Your Holy Spirit empowers us we can effectively proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through Scriptural teaching and through our godly example.  Help us to faithfully witness  in the mission field You’ve appointed us to.  In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Flowers in trunk
Saturday evening we had a ladies banquet and we thought this was a colorful scene. I filled our car trunk with flowers to take to the banquet.  We prepared a “Name That Flower” quiz for the banquet (using Powerpoint) with photos of flowers. For those who may be interested here is a similar online edition of the quiz with a link to the answer key!

Brooksyne speaking at Ladies gathering 5/22/10Brooksyne shared a message at the banquet speaking on a gardening theme and growing in Christ with the ladies memorizing 2 Peter 3:18.

Her message included:

Three requirements for Growing Plants:

  • Bright Light
  • Fertile Soil
  • Adequate Moisture

She correlated these points to that of what it takes to be a growing Christian.

Persevering new growth through pavementI am inspired by examples of perseverance in nature. This tiny plant keeps trying to pop up through the pavement in our church parking lot. Apparently a seed was covered over when some pavement was patched last fall and this tiny plant has a will to live!

He is a native of Peru but has been in the states with his wife Jenny and their four children about ten years and is involved in church planting ministry throughout south-central Pennsylvania. He will be assuming a chaplaincy role at a large wholesale greenhouse near Reading Pennsylvania and will be considered the “farm chaplain”. We met together with the owner on Friday afternoon and toured the large 200 acre farm with 240 greenhouses!

“Perseverance In Witness”

Tree growing on abandoned bridge support on Susquehanna River
I took this photo when I was on a boat with a friend on the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, PA. I was intrigued by this lone tree, which has managed to grow on a long abandoned bridge pier; an example of perseverance!

“Perseverance In Witness”

“Then Agrippa said to Paul, ‘Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?'”  Paul replied, “Short time or long—I pray God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains” (Acts 26:28,29).

Cracker Barrel country fried steakI met with a group of chaplains in a Cracker Barrel restaurant and we were discussing our work together. One chaplain shared about a ministry opportunity he had immediately following our meeting.  For some time he had sought to be an influence to a particular person but the man had been extremely resistant to any kind of Christian witness. But he had developed cancer that was determined to be terminal. My friend had felt led to call him that morning and see if they could get together. The man agreed and stated that he himself had actually intended to call the chaplain!

Before we went our separate ways we prayed around the table that the Lord would give this man an openness to receive the Lord. We requested a call from the chaplain with a report back about how the meeting went. We had a long drive and when we were almost back we received word that the man had been receptive to the gospel message and had received the Lord as his Savior!

We all have long term, “hard” cases don’t we?  These are the people (often family members and friends) whom we have witnessed to for years; those whom we earnestly long to see come to Christ. So many are resistant and hardened, so much so, that at times we just feel like giving up. But we must not. We must persevere!

Paul before AgrippaThe daily Scripture portion is an account of a personal witnessing opportunity that the Apostle Paul had. Paul had faithfully shared his testimony and sought to challenge Agrippa (and others listening) to believe and become a Christian. Agrippa’s response is a reminder of how many people respond to the Gospel, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?”

“Almost Persuaded,” is a hymn written in 1871 by Philip P. Bliss which was inspired by a sermon he heard.  During the sermon the evangelist quoted Acts 26:28 and declared, “He who is almost persuaded is almost saved, and to be almost saved is to be entirely lost!”

Agrippa properly recognized that Paul was seeking to persuade him to be a Christian. That’s significant. It wasn’t a sneaky, back door approach that Paul used. Agrippa knew just what Paul was doing.

That is our mission as we seek to impact others for Christ and His Kingdom. His Kingdom is never to be advanced by physical force, but rather by persuasion, as we demonstrate His love and care to a fallen world and present, as Paul did, the Gospel. Paul’s missionary heart is so evident in the verse that follows: “Short time or long–I pray God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains.”

Agrippa is never again mentioned in Scripture following this account. But what type of seed did Paul plant? How did this seed impact Agrippa in the days, months and years that followed? Who else had an opportunity to persuade him? Did he eventually become a Christian? What about others who were listening to Paul that day?

We’ll have to wait till heaven to hear the rest of this story.  And that’s really the way it is with so much of our attempted impact for Christ. So let us persevere in our efforts to persuade people to follow our Lord!

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Lord, help us as we share our testimony and Your message with the world around us.  We find so many who are like Agrippa; uninterested, unpersuaded, and often times hardened. Help us to persevere and not give up or become discouraged.  We pray that you would soften the hearts of those we seek to reach for You. Just like You did for Lydia open their hearts to receive our message of hope and salvation.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Cracker Barrel wallThose who regularly read this series know I enjoy both photography and old stuff.  Part of the reason I like Cracker Barrel Restaurants (along with the country fried steak) is the old stuff hanging on the walls. Well, I found this special page on their website with photos of the stuff, along with an explanation of what it is. For those, like me, who are terminally curious see here.

Finally today:  Yesterday Brooksyne wrote about a humorous gaffe she made and Lou, a chaplain friend from New Jersey, sent this story:

Not too long ago I called Home Depot and inquired about a special part I needed for a ceiling fan. I spoke with a man named John and he stated that he thinks he had what I was looking for and when I came to the store, I ask for him. I went to the store that afternoon and said to the greeter at the door, “Is there a John that works here?” She pointed me to aisle six and said “go straight to the back.” When I got there is was the rest room. 🙂 It’s funny how what we say is not exactly what we mean.

“Continue to Compel”

“Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that My house may be filled”   (Luke 14:23).

Transport for Christ mobile chapelYesterday we had an interesting missions presentation at our church.  “Transport for Christ” is a ministry where volunteers recondition truck trailers and then reassemble them as mobile chapels. They are then placed at various truck stops along with chaplains around the country and in several other countries.

Our speaker was Chaplain Bunny (Dennis) O’Hare, who shared his testimony and told about his involvement with TFC ministry. He inspired the congregation with stories of truckers coming into the chapel to receive spiritual help and told of those whose marriages were restored.  A former trucker himself, now called to ministry, he fits right in and is known by many of the drivers.  I recall him sharing once of how the driver’s lounges at the truck stops are his “fishing holes”, recalling the words of Jesus to the disciples, “I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19).

I drove a truck for a short time while in college and Brooklyn Sherrell, Brooksyne’s dad, was a truck driver so we easily identify with the truck drivers way of life, though admittedly I never was an over the road driver.  Ministry for Christ takes place in so many different ways.  All over the world today people who follow Jesus are compelling others to also follow Him.  Some, like Chaplain O’Hare, are right out there in the highways.  He, like all of us, finds that many are uninterested or reject his offer to help but he’s still out there faithfully plugging away.  And it’s the same for us isn’t it?

DL MoodyWe once visited the beautiful village of Northfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace and burial grounds for D.L. Moody, who served as an evangelist for Christ during the 1800’s.  The last sermon D.L. Moody ever preached was on November 23, 1899 in Kansas City, Missouri.  His message was based on the daily text.

Though he was so physically weak he could scarcely get up to the pulpit, he nevertheless passionately preached from his heart and some 50 souls turned to the Lord.  He went home to be with Jesus the very next month.  At his gravestone Brooksyne and I with Ester alongside us rededicated our lives to God and now over 100 years after his death we join those like him, who are obeying the call of the Master.

What a call to obey!  The “highways and hedges” represent the uttermost call of the Gospel, elsewhere worded by Christ as “the least of these.” We all have “highways and hedges” around us; people who need the invitation to God’s house.  We are to compel them to come in.  This speaks of the seriousness and persuasiveness we must have as we present the claims of our Lord. It also speaks of the life we are to live that others may be drawn to the Spirit’s power as He is evidenced in our lives.  It was the driving force behind D.L. Moody’s fervent evangelism and so many others.

Why?  “That My house may be filled.” This phrase powerfully speaks of the Father heart of God.  He wants His house full. Are we doing our part today?  May Christ’s call upon our lives be intensified through our burden for lost souls and may we all continue to compel!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, we thank You for Jesus who bore such a passion for lost humanity that He gave His all to be  clothed in the garb of humanity, so that He could identify with the physical weaknesses, spiritual temptations and other frailties common to humankind.  As we present the Person of Jesus described in the Bible to those who are lost and dying in their sins, we give them a hope and light that leads them out of deepening despair to glorious transformation.  We cannot make the choice for them, but we can give them opportunity as we obey the great commission Jesus gave before He ascended to heaven, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.   And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Back of Amish buggy

Saturday evening we had a banquet at our church for our women and girls with the theme taken from John 15, “Bearing Much Fruit”. Ester and I went over near Paradise, PA to pick up our Amish friend, Anna Ruth, along with her daughters, Sadie Ruth and Naomi Grace, and got caught behind some traffic.

Table setting
Table setting, an abundance of delicious food!

Bearded Tongue Iris
These lavendar bearded tongue irises graced the serving table.
I wonder how they ever came up with that name for a flower?

Mike Fleck preparing table for banquet
Several of the men served and Mike Fleck is shown making final preparations.

Fruit characters
An interesting contest many of the ladies participated in was making faces and characters out of fruit. Maybe you’d like to make a list of how many fruit and vegetables were used to make this couple.

Following the service yesterday we had dinner guests;
Cerwin and Doris High (seated), Bunny and Peg O’Hare (standing)
It’s sure great to be a part of the family of God!

I often refer to Doris High’s photography skills and use her photos on this site. Her current “Delight In The Lord” photo blog post features many more photos from yesterday morning, along with her colorful comments!  She even has a photo of Ester dressed up in an Amish dress!

“To God be The Glory” Video Yesterday we sang this grand old hymn in our church service and Brooksyne pointed out a line that states, “our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see”  That will be our ultimate Transport For Christ!  Several years ago I heard a powerful testimony by a man who owned a trucking company named “Wonder Transport” which he named after this phrase in the hymn.

“My Tribute” Video This  song was sung at our wedding in 1976 and remains our prayer as a ministry couple.  It was at the time a sort of updated version of the Fanny Crosby hymn. Now it is a classic in it’s own right! Another outstanding version.

“Be My Witnesses”

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Church signOne of the outstanding features we have observed here in rural Pennsylvania is the amount of creative testimony for the Lord such as the simple message “God Is Love” written at the top of a huge silo or a rustic, but thought-provoking Scripture verse on a sign along the road.

Our hearts are especially blessed as we drive up I-83 from Baltimore and see a barn with a huge mural depicting our Lord carrying His cross and these words boldly printed, “He suffered for you”.  The mural is in vibrant color and due to its placement on a very busy interstate highway is surely seen by thousands every day.

Today we may not have a large barn on which to display a witness for Christ, but we have the promised Holy Spirit to empower us to be witnesses for the living Lord who indeed suffered and died for each of us.  His calling for our lives remains the same, “be my witnesses”.

Photo of Mike and Kathy Matangelo & family

Mike and Kathy Matangelo are longtime friends who were in our church in northern Pennsylvania. For many years Mike directed a boy’s program in our church called Royal Rangers, impacting scores of boys for Christ, many who are now faithfully serving the Lord as adults. They now live in North Carolina and are both involved in prison ministry in a mentoring type program seeking to share their faith in Christ. Saturday he called me and shared that they had just returned from a special outreach day which resulted in a number of prisoners accepting Christ as their personal Savior. Mike and Kathy are staying active as His witnesses.

Pastor Steven Coles observes, “The disciples were to be Christ’s witnesses. Is this a command or a prophecy? Both! There is a sense in which every Christian is a witness. The question is, ‘Are we effective witnesses or are we a hindrance to the cause of Christ?’ The word witness is a major theme in Acts, occurring 39 times. Since it is the Lord’s command and since we cannot escape being witnesses of some sort, it behooves us to seek by our godly lives and by our clear verbal witness to bring glory to Jesus Christ.”

The book of Acts is a record of the obedience of the early church to this command and surely this command remains throughout the church age. Today the Holy Spirit continues to empower believers all over the world to be witnesses for Christ as they let their lights shine in vibrant testimony for Him.

Today how are you going to let your light shine and be His witness?

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily Prayer: Father, we are a chosen generation, a royal people who have been called out of darkness into Your marvelous light.  Through the power of Your Holy Spirit we go forth and shine Your light through our works, our attitudes, our holy lives, and by our verbal witness.  May we bring You glory as others see Your light shining through us.  And we pray that others will come to Christ through our witness.  It is in His name that we pray.  Amen.
